Anand Vaishnav
July 19, 2012

Beyond the music and performances, here's going down memory lane and digging into the TOI photo archive, to revisit some of the bitter-sweet moments that define Kaka's life and legacy in Bollywood.

1. LUCKY LEADING LADIES

Rajesh Khanna was one of the few actors who shared a successful pairing with almost all his heroines. Unlike a Dharmendra and Amitabh BachchanWhile the jury is out on which actress shared the best chemistry with him - In terms of box-office numbers, he delivered the most number of hits with Mumtaz.

Apna Desh

2. MARRYING 'BOBBY'

His sudden marriage to the much-younger (Raj Kapoor discovery) Dimple, and their subsequent separation, remains one of Bollywood’s most mysterious real-life love stories. Back in the day, the news of his marriage drove several female fans into depression. In recent years, the two had settled all their difference and in his last days, Dimple was there for him at every step.

3. FAMILY SUPPORT

Due to his troubled career and stories about various link-ups, Rajesh Khanna's married life was not the fairytale ride, everyone expected it to be. But along with Dimple, his daughters and most importantly a star son-in-law, have made sure the family's legacy remains alive in the film-industry.

4. THE AMITABH FACTOR

Though it is a bit unfair, Rajesh Khanna's downfall has always been linked to Amitabh Bachchan’s meteoric rise. While the two were cordial with each other, tabloids always suggested an undercurrent of tension in their equation. But in a rare moment, that’s etched in cinematic history, the two ageing superstars came together to pose for the cover of a magazine. While rivalries have always been a part of Bollywood legend, the Big B-Kaka story, continues to fascinate fans and the media, even after the latter’s death.

5. FAN CONNECT

In an era when Twitter did not exist, and stars were largely inaccessible, Kaka would be flooded with fan-mail. Even Khanna’s harshest critics would agree that while he was difficult with the media, and gave directors a hard time due to his starry tantrums - Khanna really valued his fan-base. And even when his films were bombing, he knew that his place was secure as Bollywood’s 'first' superstar, simply due to the love showered by his fans. During the peak of his career, for many fans, Kaka was simply living, the great Indian dream.
